Events of Sha'baan - Demise of Hafsah Radiyallahu 'Anhaa
In Sha'baan of the 45th year after Hijrah to Madinah Munawwarah, Hafsah Radiyallahu 'Anhaa passed away at the age of 60. She wasa the daughter of Umar ibn al-Khattaab Rayallahu 'Anhu.
At the age of 5, her father Umar ibn al-Khattaab Radiyallahu 'Anhu was not yet a believer. However, by the time she was 10, her father had embraced Islam.
She was first married to Khunays ibn Huthaafah Al-sahmi Radiyallahu 'Anhu. He was martyred in the battle of Uhud. Thereafter, her father sought to remarry her. Sayyiduna Uthmaan Radiyallahu Anhu was approached and so was Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Radiyallahu 'Anhu. However, nothing materialised.
The next day, he met Nabi Sallallahu 'Alayhi Wa Sallam and narrated the incident. Nabi Sallallahu 'Alayhi Wa Sallam responded, "Allah has made Uthmaan marry someone better than your daughter, and your daughter someone better than Uthmaan (referring to Nabi Sallallahu 'Alayhi Wa Sallam). Shortly thereafter, Nabi Sallallahu 'Alayhi Wa Sallam expressed his interest in Hafsah Radiyallahu 'Anhaa and married her.
Hafsah Radiyallahu 'Anhaa survived the Khilaafah of Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthmaan, Ali Radiyallahu 'Anhum and a portion of the Khilaafah of Mu'aawiyah Radiyallahu 'Anhu. Marwaan ibn Hakam, the governor or Madinah at the time, performed her Janaazah and buried her in Jannatul Baqee'.
